"Die Black Suit thing!"
Doctor Morphologis is one of the three protagonists in the Group Survival Series.
Morph was the designer and overseer of the installation and test of the Duality Drive onboard the USS Constitution when the ship traveled a great distance and suffered heavy damage.
Early Life[]
Morphologis mentioned his father and that he did not get along with him. He switched majors from Architecture to theoretical engineering, a subject in which he acquired top scores in his class for, as well as honours for his thesis. It is indicated that he also has a talent for Ship and AI design.
His performance in all of The Company's standard combat and survival simulations were remarkable. However, no evidence is seen of this on Planet Bob, as he demonstrates non-confrontational solutions to problems.
Morphologis worked as a researcher and designer for The Company focusing primarily on the fields of jump technology and theoretical physical phenomena. He worked on the design of the Duality Drive, but this was his first time ever crossing the science-engineering border.
Most of his tests were very experimental and performed in labs under high levels of control. Soon after, it was decided that the aged Federation vessel USS Constitution be used for the test-run. Morph was assigned to oversee the procedures and granted the honorary title of "Doctor".
This was the first time his experiment was to be used for a manned venture and was scaled up to the point that lab conditions could no longer be met.
He was confident of his new calculations and fully expected the drive to work optimally aboard the Constitution.
On board the USS Constitution:[]
During his brief stay on the Constitution, he tested his Duality Drive. The drive seemed to work, but the ship was heavily damaged as a result. The damage to the ship was either due to sabotage or malfunction, but the true reason of the failure remains unknown. The USS Constitution jumped directly into the gravity well of a small, rocky, terrestrial planet, later named Bob. With the ship plunging towards the planet, Captain Shack gave the order to abandon ship. Morphologis and w4sted, who was with him at the time, evacuated the ship and escaped on two separate escape pods. In the chaos, their entry trajectories were disturbed as they fell to the planet's surface.
Post Crash[]
Upon landing on planet Bob, Dr Morphologis was knocked out for a day upon impact with the planet surface. When he woke up, his oxygen supply was depleted. Desperately, he asked TIUS for Atmospheric composition, and after confirming it was safe, he removed his helmet. He explored the surrounding area, locating pieces of Debris, eventually settling down in a powered one. He built a Rover and devoted a significant amount of resources to building a mining machine, Potatoes. Primarily, this was due to TIUS, how was upset with Morph's smell after manual mining.
On day 5, Morph built Alpha Outpost, a communication station to find the Escape Pod and any other survivors close to his crash. Upon investigating the escape pod, he discovered the location of multiple other escape pods and the Bridge Section. When Morph returned to Home Base, he started to build up the walls.
On day 8, Morphologis returned to base with Potatoes with materials to fix her up. Once Potatoes was fixed, Morph continued to improve his base's infrastructure and starts investigating the mysterious attacker as the night fell.
The Two Weeks[]
2 days after starting to look for clues, TIUS informs Morph that she has completely lost contact with Alpha Outpost. Morph takes his Rover and Potatoes to go and investigate. When he finally gets to Alpha Outpost, he finds the station destroyed, and the battery has imploded. Morph decides to salvage whatever materials he could from it decides to build another one. Suddenly, TIUS finds a signal from Home Base, which she reported as similar to the one that was detected at Alpha Outpost. He rushes to his base but fails to make in time as an explosion rings out through the valley. He arrives to find his base mostly destroyed. Fearful of what may have caused these attacks, he salvages what he can and flees into the wilderness. He builds a small Shelter and orders Potatoes to guard him for the night.
2 weeks later, Potatoes is returning from a mining mission to help make computers for the Mobile Base. Morph sends Potatoes out to transmit a recorded Distress Call to any survivors. While Potatoes is out, Morph, fearing for the return of the unknown threat, builds a room so he can sleep without Potatoes guarding him. In the night, TIUS detects a signal that is moving around them. Morph moves outside the room briefly to investigate, but seeing nothing, becomes fearful and returns to the room. Potatoes wakes up Morphologis the next morning, and Morph instructs Potatoes to charge for 1 hour. Meanwhile, Morph departs in his survival rover to scan of the area. He finds some ore deposits and The 'Grey Suit' suddenly appears, scaring him and causing him to drive the Survival Rover of a cliff. He wakes up with a broken leg, but flees the area in fear. TIUS runs out of power and he collapses in pain and exhaustion, unable to move. The next day he is awakened from a nightmare by Potatoes, whom he orders to go get the seat from the damaged rover. After 1 hour Potatoes is back and she brings Morphologis back to the Mobile Base.
Looking for survivors[]
"Unknown vessel, this is Doctor Morphologis, of the USS Constitution. I'm under fire, attack I don't know. Something here is trying to get me and, and I can't kill it. Approach with caution. Help if you can." --Doctor Morphologis to the Unknown Aircraft
Morphologis tells Potatoes to actively seek survivors in a general area instead of transmitting as a desperate attempt to find help.
In the meantime, Morph activated the thrusters on his mobile base and fled the area in an attempt to escape from whatever was chasing him. After some discussion with TIUS, he lands the base to scout out ores needed to manufacture armaments. After two mining trips, Morph accumulates enough material to build a turret: a quad AA gun.
Morph, tired from a long days work decides to rest. Waking up in the early morning, he sets out to find additional resources. TIUS informs Morph that she is detecting some interference around the rock. The Grey Suit, thought to have been left kilometers behind, appears from behind the rock, slowly advancing upon him. Morph desperately pulls his gun out and starts shooting, but he finds it has no effect. He rushes back to the Mobile base and starts shooting at the suit this time with the Quad gun. During this time, TIUS informs him that an unknown aircraft is approaching. Morph sends a distress call to the aircraft, and soon after he gets a transmission back from none other than CaptainShack. He lands near Morph and Commander W4sted provides cover fire as Morph makes his escape.
Found[]
Shortly after Dr Morphologis arrives at the Base with a View, Commander W4stedspace's paranoia increased severely. At one point, Morph attempted to go and speak with the Commander, but all he and TIUS heard over the com chatter was delusional rambling. He and CaptainShack moved to investigate in the morning, and were fired upon by one of W4sted's Turrets on his garage. W4sted forbade Morph from approaching, but allowed the Captain to speak with him. Morp used TIUS to eavesdrop on the exchange, determining that W4sted had brain injuries and required serious medical attention.
CaptainShack had Morphologis set to work building a small medical scanner to scan the Commander's brain. CaptainShack retrieved materials from W4sted's Base, Morph's Base, Falnore's escape pod and an Iron ore deposit. After the scanner is finished, Morph tells Shack lure W4sted into the scanner under the premise that he is "reversing the polarity of the Lithium Ion Batteries". Shack unconvincingly agrees to this, and lures the Commander into the healing chamber. Morph stands on top of the bed to lure w4sted into the scanner and W4sted goes in. Taking the bait, Shack and Morph trap W4sted inside the room and attempt to persuade W4sted to cooperate. W4sted refuses to listen to Morph, but he relents when Shack convinces him it is for the best.
After the scan, Morph notes that there are several irregularities in the brain, and decides to use Medical Nanites to treat W4sted. The procedure appears to work, despite the Commander pranking the both of them by pretending to say Umbrellas after the procedure. Privately, Morph is not fully convinced that the Nanites fully worked, and the Commander is still openly distrustful, but far less hostile to Morph than he was previously.
Life at the base[]
Shortly after W4sted's operation, Shack assigns the crew to gather materials to fight back against the Grey Suit. After the Morning pep talk, He heads to W4sted's Garage in hopes of acquiring Potatoes from him. W4sted refuses however, which results in an angry Morph ordering TIUS to turn on Potatoes and let him wreck havoc inside, telling W4sted to "Have fun!". He designs the initial mining rig and runs his idea by W4sted, who reccomends changes to make the machinesafer and more practical, their previous differences largely set aside.
During the construction process, the Grey Suit makes a visit at the base. At first, Morph played off the sabotage as nothing more than shoddy welding in an attempt to hide what he already suspected. W4sted confirmed Morph's fears after reviewing video from the previous evening. After discussing the next course of action, it was agreed that the rig was the priority, followed by finding a way to track and destroy the suit.
One the Rig was finalized and operational, Morph set to work repairing potatoes and constructing physical air deployable sensors, along with setting up the code for an entire sensor grid that could be operated from the Base with a view. He is present during the first tests of the defenses and weapons constructed by Shack and W4sted, and decided he wanted to contribute as well. In what some call "The worst idea of the story of bad ideas", Morph decided to attach a battleship cannon to Potatoes. The thing (fortunately, as explained by TIUS) broke with the recoil of the gun.
Morph was helping the captain improve the command center and his bunks when TIUS loses contact with one of the sensor drones. Shack and Morph go to check on it, and from the wreckage of the drone they see that it was destroyed by Morph's mobile base. Morph wanted to go after the thing immediately, but Shack told him to calm down, and that they would be back soon enough, reasoning that the Weapons mounted on the vehicle were enough of a threat that they could not simply let the thing go.
Looking for the suit[]
After a long night of gaming, Morph exits his laboratory only to be met by a Mech (unbeknownst to him or Shack, created by W4sted) threatening to open fire if he did not comply. Shack pours an entire magazine into the vehicle's leg, and Morph hides in a corner as this occurs, learning that the vehicle is in fact simply W4sted's latest project: Ed. After some talk about "Ed", Shack "borrows" Morphologis' lab and modifies one of the Sensor Drones to have propellers. During this time, Morph tries repeatedly to get into the base using the top hatch, different doors and so on.
The crew assign posts at the base, with R-5, Ed 209, and Potatoes staying behind at the base to defend it. The Warden's Redemption, piloted by Shack and crewed by Morph, would search from the skies, while the General B piloted by W4sted would offer ground support. The crew sets off on finding the suit and stops at a hill for the night where they set up a camp, where Morph is mocked for bringing the wrong colored tent. Morph watches the Air Drone's deployment, and the crew enjoy a bonfire before bed. They determine shifts of watch, and Morph is assigned first watch.
During this time, Morph questions what went wrong with the experiment, and how this had happened. He remembers how he had met with Federation command and had objections to the test that he himself in retrospect wish he had pressed far harder in light of the disaster. He also reflects on how much different of a person he was. As he ponders this, Shack comes to relieve him, and Morph drifts into sleep.
The next morning the crew wake up. Morph picks up a signal in the Warden, and confirms that it is his Mobile Base, though it is quite faint and cutting in and out. Cautious of what to expect, they carefully navigate through the valley, keeping an eye out for any signs of the base or the suit. As they navigate, Morph and Shack attempt to warn W4sted that he is heading for a cliff, but it is too little too late, as the Commander's vehicle plunges over a cliff and to the base of a giant Mesa, creating a sinkhole that resulted in the discovery of the underground facility and stranded W4sted from them.
Shack and Morph arm themselves and attempt to find him, carefully looking around and determining that the facility had technology that was similar to older federation equipment, but noted that though the facility was designed for a crew, there seemed to be no crew. In spite of this, they pressed on, with Morph having TIUS continue to attempt to contact or find W4sted. They make brief contact with W4sted and tell him they are coming to help him, but worry that his damaged sout will harm him.
They press on to an Armory, where they find some explosives and are ambushed by a drone, forcing them to flee into what appears to be a massive refinement plant. Shack first notices the Drone flying in the top corner of the room and prepares to open fire, but an increasingly fearful Morph tries to point out something far more dangerous: The Grey Suit. They agree to hold fire until the creature leaves the room, then ambush the Drone and take it down. They manage to make contact with W4sted again and warn him of the Drones before they lose contact. They continue to move, and manage to meet W4sted again, who claims to have encountered a drone. In the brief exchange, Morph advises against using explosvies to move the debris isolating the three of them from each other. They agree to try and find another way to each other, and Morph and Shack enter into a massive chamber, with them marvelling at the sheer size and scope of it.
After a brief search, Morph realizes and alerts the Captain that the Grey suit is in the room, and it is slowly advancing on them. Shack tells the Doctor to run, and procedes to open fire on it with his Automatic Rifle. When Morph complains, Shack says that "It makes him feel better". Morph then suggests after being cornered that they plant Explosives on the walkway and detonate them to drop the suit to the chasm below. Shack concurs and begins to set up the trap while Morph lures it to them. As the suit approaches, Morph retreats and he and Shack fire upon the explosives, dropping it to the bottom of the chasm below.
The Activation of Protocol Foxtrot 03[]
Elated and relieved, Morph and Shack are able to contact W4sted, and share the news of their victory. W4sted suggests they attempt to meet at some manner of control room or other rendevouz point, to which the they agree. However, they have to jump a rather large hole left in the walkway by the explosion several times: Once to get to the main walkway that will take them back to a large door that they are going to try to open, and another time to attempt to rewire the control panel.
After an hour of tampering, and extremely annoyed Captain Shack forces Morph out of the room, and to his horror proceeds to blast the thing to smithereens with explosives and bullets. By some miracle, this works, and they cross the chasm for the last time. Making their way to the large door, W4sted contacts them and informs them that a large mean drone is attempting to find him, and he needs them to find the control room. Shack and Morph double time it to the room, passing by what seems to be the reactor. W4sted is on the other side of a blocked door fighting against the drone. Shack and Morph panic and start pressing random buttons, leading to the accidental activation of Protocol Foxtrot 03.
Between Seasons[]
In the time between season 1 and 2 Morphologis' task was finding clues on the facility and the map that appeared on the screen. He then began to work on a Silo to launch his satellite. The Silo will eventually becomes the core of the new base. He's working there when the Drones attack the base destroying it.
Personality[]
Doctor Morphologis initially started off as a snooty Company researcher with the credentials and overconfidence to match. He often antagonized those he worked with that did not meet his standards, and in some ways considered himself better than anyone around him. After the failure of his pet project however, Morph became far less confident, and the rest of these traits evaporated and gave way to insecurity.
Morph has always been a committed, if sometimes naive, optimist. Even when Shack ordered the evacuation of the Constitution, he insisted the ship could be saved, and stayed until the last second in an attempt to prevent it from falling. When the rig was sabotaged, he suggested it could have been his fault and not the Grey Suit.
Morph is also very patient, slowly forming a bond with TIUS and Potatoes. He also puts up with W4sted's anger towards him more often than not, particularly because he feels guilt over the destruction of the Constitution.
Morph also has a very deep concious, and often privately ponders if he had been at fault, or what had possibly caused the destruction ot the Constitution. He does not believe it was him, but he is not very vehement in this assertion.
In contrast to W4sted, Morph demonstrates a complete lack of caution when doing just about anything, from the removal of scaffolding from the Mining Rig to installing a Battleship cannon onto Potatoes, never bothering to consider that he might strand himself on a high ledge in the former case, or that his mining drone may have no conception of what a gun even is in the latter. Morph also demonstrates this lack of caution when getting excited or emotional, particularly when he wanted to track down his Mobile Base at night or when they encountered the first drone in the prescence of the Grey Suit.
In contrast to the other characters, Morph seems to display the most fear of any character of the Grey Suit, displaying high emotion and fear when encountering it, or even the mentioning of it. When it is "destroyed", he is spitefully glad that the "thing is dead". As he was the first character to encounter the Grey suit, and that it destroyed his first base, antenna relay, Rover, and Potatoes, as well as chased him for dozens of kilometers for no known reason.
